Information
Melivoia, the beauty of the present and the past combined with its amphitheatrical location as it is built on the outskirts of Kissavos gives us the opportunity to have a wonderful view of the Aegean Sea and to have the feeling that we will walk on the soft sand that spreads out in front of it.
The oldest name of the village was Athanati and Thanatos, a Thessalian settlement of the late Byzantine era. According to indications, it was built here around 1350 after the unification of settlements that were scattered in the ravines of Kissavos. after the abandonment of the beaches and the Velika Castle due to crusaders, pirates and various invaders. It was renamed Melivoia in 1920 since the previous name indicated the hardships it went through over the centuries.
Today it is a village full of life, amidst dense vegetation, traditional, with stone houses and amazing cobblestone streets. It is the largest village in our Municipality with 548 permanent residents who reach 1000 in the summer. A wonderful place for holidays that combines mountain and sea. A unique experience for hiking enthusiasts is the Melivoia-Velika path through the “Souvela” ravine, which is organized with rest areas. We will pass by wooden bridges, stone fountains from the beautiful small waterfall of Sotiritsa and after a 2.5 hour journey we will dive into the sea of Velika.
It is worth visiting the archaeological collection in the village that houses the excavation findings from the Castle of Velika and the surrounding areas, as well as the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of 1820, Agia Paraskevi, the Stavropegic Monastery of John the Theologian of 1776, Panagia Velika in the second half of the 12th century, a unique example of the technique in Thessaly, and the archaeological site at the Castle of Velika.
In the village we have a festival on May 8, June 30, July 26 and St. Thomas. We should not forget the Chestnut Festival in October, a three-day feast for the most dynamic product of Melivoia.
