Megalovryso

Nivoliani, the heavenly city, today’s Megalovryso. After Metaxochori, higher up in Kissavos, in this forest complex, this unique botanical garden that is a paradise for wild birds, we find the traditional settlement of Megalovryso.

The fountain in the center of the village -Mesochori- and the spring under the plane trees -Megali vrysi- irrigates the land and people. Our walk along the cobblestone streets of the village will be unique, enjoying the stunning view of the plain of Agia and the wonderful nature.

At the entrance to the village, one of the most important late-Byzantine monasteries in the area, the Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is built. It preserves the 13th century brick-enclosed masonry with a wooden roof in the sanctuary.

In the center of the village we can visit the old school where time stops in the 50s, showing us the teaching of that era and where the villagers have preserved and protected with great love until now almost all the school material.

An interesting visit is also the pottery workshop that has been operating for years and the peculiar musical instrument workshop. If we finally get tired of our walk, in the square we can rest and eat at the tavern and enjoy the unique coolness of the village in the summer. By car or by hiking, one thing is certain that we will never forget this place.
