Velika

Velika is the third settlement and the end of the 13 km coastline.

Its name is probably Slavic, meaning wonderful, magnificent, large.

A beach with alternating sand and pebbles, it maintains the style of the coastline. Crystal clear waters that gradually deepen, ideal for children.

On its beach, sea lilies grow, rare flowers of 2500 thousand years old that bloom on August 15th and are a protected species. It has two streams that flow into this beach of Electrologists and Velika. Near the Velika stream there is a small multi-purpose hall, Platania, with wonderful natural coolness, the small Theater, a playground, a small field, 5X5 and the municipal refreshment center.

Just above the multi-purpose hall but very close, there is the 6th century castle of Velika, built on an ancient fortification, we only need a 10” hike and we will be compensated by the stunning view of the Aegean Sea, the Sporades and Mount Athos. On the same road, quite further up, there is the Stavropegial Monastery of I. Theologos of 1776, which is worth visiting, as well as Panagia Velika, the Virgin of the Wolf, a small single-aisled Byzantine street church of the 12th century, a unique example of the technique, in Thessaly, of the hidden plinth. The Church celebrates on August 23 during the novena of the Virgin Mary.

For hiking enthusiasts, there is the Melivoia-Velika trail, suitable for families with children, and according to the mythology of the area, we will walk in the footsteps of King Philoctetes!
